For much of their early life, drones were seen as nothing more than toys or flying cameras.

An Engineer Before An Entrepreneur

Unlike many technology success stories, DJI wasn’t born from a grand vision of dominating a global market.

When Frank Wang founded DJI in Shenzhen back in 2006, his focus was far more niche. Frank wanted to build better flight control systems. At the time, drones were notoriously difficult to stabilise and much harder to fly reliably. They remained largely confined to the market of hobbyists and specialist users willing to accept their limitations.

However, DJI’s approach was far more focused on the problem. Attacking the issue with an engineering perspective, they began to ask what drones could eventually become and executed a plan of dependability.

More Than Just A ‘Better’ Drone.

As DJI’s research and technology deepened, the conversation slowly started to shift away from the drone itself. The improvements had encouraged conversation around what the drone could actually achieve.

Reliable GPS positioning and automated flight modes made drones accessible to more inexperienced pilots. Surveyors could capture detailed topographical data within hours rather than days. Infrastructure owners gained a safer way to inspect assets without the time, effort or risk of sending engineers into hazardous environments.

DJI hadn’t simply built a better aircraft, it had created a new entry point. And this very distinction, not only multiplied the use cases astronomically, but it defined a market.

When Industries Took Notice

Consumer Drones did introduce millions of people to aerial photography. But enterprise customers saw something far more incentivising.

The real value lay in the data being collected and the further decisions that could be made and supported by the data. Whether that was measuring stockpiles or inspecting solar farms, drones were becoming a business tool that provided genuine value. Not just another gadget.

DJI recognised this opportunity very early. Alongside its consumer success, the company began to steadily expand its enterprise portfolio. They developed platforms specifically designed for agriculture inspection, surveying and public safety.

In doing so, DJI helped establish many of the commercial applications that define today’s Service Drone market.

Setting The Benchmark

Nearly two decades have passed since DJI was founded. Today, they remain the company against which much of the industry is measured.

According to dataportl’s latest research, the company has retained a commanding position within the service drone market during 2025. Boasting professional shipments estimated at around 300,000 units. Agriculture continues to be one of its strongest segments. Reflecting the growing adoption of autonomous spraying and crop management solutions across farming operations.

With major success, DJI translated its consumer leadership into the enterprise market. A transition that many tech companies attempt, but very few can say they achieved.

The Market Today
