Hi dataportl community!
For those of you who don't know, IFA (Innovation For All) is a yearly conference held in Berlin. Designed to showcase the best of new tech to the consumer world. Spanning home appliances, smart home, gaming, audio and pretty much everything in between.
Today was my first day trawling the halls of Messe Berlin for IFA 2026, and honestly, "trawling" is the right word. This place is enormous. You could genuinely lose a small country in some of these halls.
First impressions of this year's event, and the one thing that became apparent almost immediately, was ecosystems.
Spanning nearly every segment at the event, ecosystems are clearly the driving force behind how brands are designing their flagship products right now. The idea of using one battery across a whole range of products was everywhere you looked. And it wasn't just the batteries.
The push for brands to have a full lineup, spanning different sizes, price points and charging capabilities, all built around the same platform, is increasing massively. It's not enough anymore to sell someone a good drill or a good vacuum. The play now is to sell them a system, and then quietly sell them the next six products that plug into it.
You can see the logic. Once someone's bought into a battery platform, the cost of switching brands goes up every single time they add another tool to the shed. It's not loyalty in the traditional sense, it's just very well designed inertia.
The power of the ecosystem is everywhere. From garden tools to hoovers, and then some genuinely more inventive ideas coming out of China that make you wonder why nobody else thought of it first.
Which brings me to my favourite find of the day, a company called BAYU.
I honestly never knew I needed one single power source that could jump start my car, pump up my football, and vacuum the crumbs out of my back seat. But now that I've seen it, I want it. There is no rational explanation for this. It is not a need. It is a want, and apparently that's all it takes.
That's really the trick of the ecosystem approach when it's done well. You don't walk away thinking "I need that specific gadget." You walk away thinking "I need to be inside whatever world that gadget belongs to."
Give it a few more years and I imagine we'll all own a battery pack that unlocks our front door, brews our coffee and reads us a bedtime story. Continuous advancements only mean this ecosystem thing is only gonna grow.
More from the halls tomorrow.
