From punchline to products people actually wear

Smart glasses have failed before, and publicly. Google Glass launched in 2013 with huge expectations, became a punchline, and was eventually pulled from sale.

So the industry made a different bet. The future, it decided, was the headset: full immersion, virtual worlds, the metaverse. Facebook even renamed itself Meta in 2021.

What we track:

  • Extended Reality (XR) Headsets: fully immersive devices for virtual, augmented and mixed reality.

  • Audio Eyewear: essentially open-air headphones in the shape of glasses, with no cameras or displays.

  • Smart Glasses: eyewear with at least one smart feature beyond audio, such as a camera, a voice assistant or a display.

So what’s the real story?
